5 Bake Off crossover shows we would LOVE to see!

Murder + Baking. Maybe it’s just us, but we think they go together like strawberries and cream….Sherlock Holmes and Watson…or.. Well like the ‘Great British Bake Off’ and an English summer. Which is one of the reasons we wrote our own murder mystery homage to the legendary baking TV show - ‘‘Bump Off at the Bake Off". A murder mystery set in an English baking competition is a mash up made in Miss Marple heaven.

So, like many other ‘Great British Bake Off’ fans, we got super excited when we saw Bake Off presenter Paul Hollywood promote a Deadpool / Bake Off special on social media.

We thought: ANOTHER GREAT MASH UP! ‘When Hollywood met Hollywood’! as one witty follower commented, going crazy for the photograph of Paul with Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Reynold’s wife Blake Lively.

Whilst it appears that naughty Paul was just teasing - by releasing a photo actually taken LAST summer - it reminded us of another great crossover Bake Off show: when the cast of the comedy show Derry Girls took over the Bake Off tent in 2019. A delicious combination.

This got us thinking about other possible GBBO crossover shows we would like to see. More along the lines of our own ‘dark and deadly meets light and fluffy’ vibe. Here are 5 cracking ideas that we think are absolute showstoppers.

Stranger Bakes

A GBBO and Stranger Things crossover show. Who wouldn’t like to see Steve, Max and Eleven battle with Paul and Pru in the Bake Off tent? And if Joyce - AKA Winona Ryder - put in an appearance, we know she would get a Hollywood Handshake. Vecna does Vol au Vent? The Upside Down meets Upside down cake? Boom.

Game of Scones

Game of Thrones meets Bake Off. Now this is almost perfect, bar the fact that it clearly encourages people to pronounce the word scone incorrectly (read it scon, please), but we will let that go for the brilliant mash-up TV show it would make. Or should we say…bake! For one thing, there could be an entire creme brulee special where a dragon unleashes the blow torch to end all blow torches, to make that golden caramelised crust that shatters under your spoon. Jon Snow, eat your heart out.

Breaking Bread

A Breaking Bad and GBBO show. This, we think, is a natural crossover, and one that quite frankly should have happened already. Cooking, after all, is chemistry, and Walter and Jesse are indeed professional cooks of a sort, so they have very transferable skills. Gus ‘The Chicken Man’ could do some excellent things with pies and savouries, while lawyer Saul Goodman is already an expert at cooking the books.

The Man with the Golden Bun

A James Bond and Bake Off crossover? Think about it! Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig would look excellent in an apron and no doubt extremely competitive in the technical challenge. Q  - AKA Ben Wishaw - could produce some very technical and unexpected gadgets. Meanwhile Judi Dench would almost certainly wipe the floor with all of them. We are already dreaming of Double 0 Lemon Meringue Pie.

Only Murders in the Tent

So in a way a Bake Off and Only Murders in the Building crossover is the one that we love the most, because it replicates our own murder/baking combo, whilst also injecting a bit of comedy and Hollywood razzle dazzle. What’s not to love? We can’t quite picture a world where Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin rub flour-covered shoulders with Prue Leith and Alison Hammond, but what a wonderful world it would be. And there’s something gloriously camp about the brilliant Disney+ series that Noel Fielding could really embrace.

So many possibilities and so little time. If you fancy your own personal crossover experience, try Bump Off at the Bake Off murder mystery game and sprinkle some murder on your  sweet treats this autumn!
